*** Review ***

One of my all-time favourite films, The Slipper and the Rose ticks all the boxes as far as having everything that a classic movie should have. There’s a cast of actors who for the most part were household names at the time or have since become household names. It’s a well-known story too, who doesn’t love the tale of Cinderella? The musical numbers are catchy and the choreography is eye catching with some wonderful ensemble scenes. There’s a slight twist on the story we are all familiar with too, which still makes me hold my breath for an uncomfortably long time before the happy ending arrives.

The Blu-ray version enhances a stunning piece of cinema which has been superbly directed by Bryan Forbes and you have the opportunity to listen to his commentary. Also available as special bonus features are interviews with Rosalind Ayres and Annette Crosbie who provide thoroughly interesting insights into the film. Rosalind was a fantastic ‘Naughty Sister’ together with Benidorm’s Sherrie Hewson, together with their rather scarily assertive mother played by Margaret Lockwood, they are a force to be reckoned with. In stark contrast to Gemma Craven’s beautifully serene Cinders and of course, Richard Chamberlain’s chiselled, handsome Prince Charming. Add in Kenneth More as the cunning Lord Chamberlain and the scenario is set for love, heartbreak and more love.

If you’ve yet to see this movie, I highly recommend you watch the new Blu-ray edition and if you’ve seen it before – watch it again, and again – I will be doing that very thing! Whilst singing along to “A bride finding ball” amongst other numbers! Enjoy it, it’s the perfect gift for Christmas.
