National Television Awards 2018

It’s one of the highlight of the television calendar year and the stars were out in force to find out who the public deemed to be the best following a public vote which closed at midday on the day of the show. Did your favourites win? It was a real mixture of predictable outcomes and surprise winners – with many deserving recipients of the glorious trophy and some fantastic guest star presenters too.

TV & Movie Scene were there and are delighted to share our highlights and best dressed celebrities with you.

Best Dressed

So many inspiring women walked the red carpet last night and I was spoilt for choice as to who to narrow down in my TOP 5 best dressed, however I have to hand the accolade to:

Ruth Langsford

Ruth Langsford always looks effortlessly glam to me, despite her protestations on Twitter! This bold colour was a great choice for her wonderful figure and the style also suited her beautifully. Even from the distance away that I was sitting in the auditorium, I was able to spot her immediately when she took her seat. For all the right reasons!

Faye McKeever

Faye McKeever, star of Little Boy Blue has an enviable figure and looked exceptionally stunning in this glorious black gown from David M Robinson. I particularly admired the exquisitely detailed sleeves. Beautiful!

Holly Willoughby

Holly Willoughby always owns the red carpet and this year was no exception. She really stood out in the blue tones of her Grecian-inspired gown by Elisabetta Franchi. Elegance personified, which we’ve come to expect from lovely Holly.

Chizzy Akudolu

Chizzy Akudolu, the star of Strictly Come Dancing and Holby City alumni sparkled in her outfit, outing together a look that worked fantastically for her and exuding stylish comfort too. I would wear this myself and think she’s a red carpet trend setter!

Shirley Ballas

What can I say about Shirley Ballas? She was the belle of the red carpet and a glamorous addition to this year’s red carpet. She also managed to perform a fabulous dance when presenting an award, later on and proved to whooping crowds why she’s Head Judge of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Blue Planet II ~ The Impact award was one of the most truly deserved awards of the night, with BBC One’s Blue Planet II collecting the accolade and Sir David Attenborough giving a tremendous speech. I couldn’t imagine a more fitting winner – the programme was akin to a cinematic experience as well as educational in the extreme.

Ant & Dec ~ Ant McPartlin had a rather harrowing 2017. However, fans have shown their loyalty in spades by awarding Ant and Dec a cool three awards this year. The popular duo picked up awards for ITV’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, TV Presenter and the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award for ITV’s Saturday Night Takeaway. I am delighted for both of them, but especially pleased for Ant.

Brucie Bonus ~ I miss Bruce Forsyth, he was part of my childhood as a light entertainer and his passing was a surreal experience – somehow I thought he’d be around forever. The fact that a tribute has been paid to him in so much as name the Entertainment Award the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Awards is only right and proper. Wilnelia, his overtly emotional widow presented the award and she did her man proud. Good game, good game!

O’Grady’s Special Recognition ~ A more worthy Special Recognition award winner than Paul O’Grady I couldn’t imagine. He is such a fantastic example of a talented Presenter who brings pressing issues, mostly the issues relating to rescue dogs, to the fore. Paul’s compassion and humour do him credit and it’s about time he was recognised for all he does.

It’s never too early for a dance from Shirley ~ To watch Shirley Ballas, ‘new’ Head Judge of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, dance is it witness the most exceptional masterclass you will ever see. All this in just a few moments of air time during the show last night. I already rated Ballas as a superb addition to the established panel, however she has just risen higher in my estimation. What a great choice of tune and an inspired performance. Unforgettable.

Before I go…

I must add a final round of applause and standing ovation for Dermot O’Leary, he is a superbly talented Presenter and a huge part of the smooth running of one of the events of the year.
